Located in Shawnee, Kansas, Hayward's Pit Bar B Que & Catering proudly stakes its claim as a must-visit barbecue destination for both locals and visitors craving authentic Kansas City-style smoked meats. This barbecue restaurant delivers a vibrant dining experience centered around richly smoked flavors, perfectly crisped textures, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere that invites guests to linger over some of the best barbecue the region offers.
The star of the show here is undoubtedly their KC’s Best Burnt Ends Period — tender, caramelized morsels packed with smoky depth and a touch of char that barbecue enthusiasts dream about. Complementing these succulent burnt ends are standout menu items like the Fried Okra, which bursts with a crispy coating and a refreshing snap inside, and the Waffle-Cut Masa Coated Sweet Potato Fries, which bring a unique twist to classic comfort food with a subtle corn flavor and a satisfyingly crunchy bite.
Hayward’s also shines with its array of appetizers starting with the Pit Smoked Wings by the Pound, expertly smoked and fried to balance a succulent, tender interior with a crisp exterior, tossed in flavorful options ranging from their house original BBQ Sauce to a fiery Spicy BBQ and tangy Helga Mustard. The Portabella ‘Shrooms, golden and seasoned with a perfect blend of peppers and garlic, come paired with a zesty horseradish sauce that leaves a lingering, pleasant spice.
For those seeking hearty yet approachable fare, the BBQ Bowl and Hayward's Hash offer creative comfort dishes that marry smoky meats with sides like cheesy corn, creamy house slaw, and the man-and-cheese BBQ beans — a decadent, smoky, and satisfying combination that keeps customers coming back. The Corned Beef Burnt End Reuben Sandwich is another standout, marrying the tenderness of burnt ends with tangy sauerkraut and creamy dressing, layered between perfect bread. Every bite sings with bold, smoky goodness.
On the side, Hayward’s offers a thoughtfully curated selection such as the traditional Thick Cut Fries, creamy Potato Salad with Egg, and the irresistible Hayward's Cheezy Corn Bake, a rich and flavorful dish that complements the smoky mains beautifully. The housemade iced tea and selections like Angry Orchard Cider and cola round out the menu, providing refreshing balances to the smoky rich fare.
The atmosphere here complements the menu beautifully — casual yet lively, with attentive service that makes diners feel right at home. As one satisfied customer, Kristi Bernard, shared, “The customer service was fantastic. The BBQ sauce is sweet but earthy perfection. Overall, will recommend and come back.” This warmth extends through every interaction, making Hayward’s not just a place to eat but to enjoy an authentic KC BBQ experience.
Regulars like Rafael Garcia praise the authentic smoky aroma greeting guests upon arrival, with perfectly seasoned and smoked meats that set a high standard: “The fried pickles were my favorite appetizer. All the meat was well seasoned and smoked to perfection. The beans are my favorite side dish they are out of this world.” Meanwhile, newcomer Cindy Hitchcock, visiting from Houston, was equally impressed, noting the “burnt ends and ribs were cooked to perfection” and the entire family variety dinner offered a satisfying range of flavors and textures that validated Hayward’s reputation.

Their commitment to smoky mastery, inventive sides, and relaxed, friendly service make every visit a memorable occasion that leaves you eagerly anticipating the next bite.
First time trying for us and pleasantly surprised. Service was great and helpful. We had onion rings for the appetizer and they were crisp and delicious. I had a pulled pork sandwich with slaw and two onion rings on it. It was pretty good. We had a choice of two sauces the mild was more like ketchup the spicy was better. My Mac n cheese was very good but my wife's baked beans were the star. Overall every one was satisfied. We'll be back.
The customer service was fantastic. The brand beer was smooth and tasty. I had the bowl with cheesy corn tomatoes and cucumber which added a very fresh taste. The BBQ sauce is sweet but earthy perfection. Overall, will recommend and come back.
Hands down my favorite KC BBQ spot. I could smell the smoke from the pits when I walked in. The hot BBQ sauce was spicy. The fried pickles were my favorite appetizer. All the meat was well seasoned and smoked to perfection. The beans are my favorite side dish they are out of this world.
We are visiting from Houston so we wanted to try the local BBQ to see how it compared to ours. We ordered the Family variety dinner. We ordered burnt ends, brisket, ribs, potato salad, coleslaw, thick cut fries and an order of their famous onion rings. Unfortunately, I didn't think about taking a picture before we devoured most of it! The burnt ends and ribs were cooked to perfection! The brisket was sliced thin, so it was what we're accustomed to. Brisket in Texas is cut thicker with a smoke ring. Their brisket was tasted good, but was sliced to be served as a BBQ sandwich. The homemade slaw and potato salad were excellent. We loved the onion rings, they lived up to their reputation. Homemade spicy BBQ Sauce had just the right amount of kick. Our server was fantastic and the ambience was family friendly. The price was very reasonable considering the amount of food we were given. Even if you don't live nearby, its worth the drive! Highly recommend, 10 out of 10!!! Pictures are of our leftovers.
The best BBQ I’ve ate since living in KC. I got the Totchos. The hash browns were fried perfectly and the meat- to die for. So good. Even the bread on the sandwiches my boyfriend ate was good. Potato salad was delicious as well. Will definitely be back!
Andrea was amazing!! She helped us decide what we wanted and the food was spectacular!! The pork burnt ends melted in my mouth and the flavor was perfect! Will be returning!
8/10 Brisket: pretty good, not as melt in your mouth as others and has a little chewyness. Not as flavorful as others and not as well seasoned. Really good otherwise and tasty with honey mustard. $31 per pound. 8/10 Spare Ribs: nice tasty ribs that aren’t too burnt and have good flavor. Pretty great! $20 special 9/10 BBQ Beans: Delicious rich flavor with great meat inside, hint of spicy but otherwise fabulous 9/10 Honey Mustard: Delicious and perfect, not as good as Joe’s but fabulous 4/10 BBQ sauce: To spicy and dark in flavor, not my favorite and original Haywards had sweeter flavor. This one is like a ketchup with spice. Would probably go for honey mustard instead Nice crunchy toast and pretty good service! But the toast needed butter! Was misquoted a price but they made it right! Meat was a little greasier than preferred and I would love to have another option for BBQ sauce as the sauce here was not my thing, but I enjoyed my meal here and liked the service and atmosphere! The Original Hayward’s memorabilia was fantastic I’ll be back!
